1. What is a Pilot Peer Support Programme (PPSS)?
A PPSS is a confidential support system where pilots can seek help for mental wellbeing or life stress issues — either for themselves or on behalf of a colleague. It’s designed to promote early detection, prevention, and support.
2. Who can use the PPSS?
Any pilot within Fly Pro SRL can access the System. It is available to anyone experiencing challenges that may affect their well-being or professional performance.
3. Is the System confidential?
Yes. Confidentiality is a core principle of the PPSS. All conversations are private unless there are exceptional, clearly defined medical or safety-related circumstances that require disclosure.
4. What kind of issues can I talk to a Peer about?
You can talk about a wide range of concerns including daily life stress, post-incident trauma, substance or alcohol misuse, job performance issues, mental health conditions, and workplace conflict or bullying.
5. What is the goal of PPSS?
The primary aim is to support pilots through difficult times, to help them stay fit to fly, or, when necessary — facilitate a safe and supported return to flying duties.
6. Who are the Peers?
Peers are trained line professionals who understand the unique pressures of the profession. They have been equipped with basic listening and counselling skills and are familiar with internal policies to provide relevant advice.
7. Are Peers qualified mental health professionals?
No, Peers are not therapists or doctors. They are trained to listen and support. However, they work closely with Mental Health Professionals who can step in when clinical help is needed.
8. What happens if I need professional help?
If deeper intervention is required, Peers can help you access suitable treatment through qualified Mental Health Professionals (MHPs), ideally aviation clinical psychologists.
9. Can I use PPSS for someone else’s concern?
Yes, if you are worried about a colleague, you can write a request within the PPSS for advice on how to support them or encourage them to speak with a Peer.
10. Does talking to a Peer affect my medical certification or flight status?
Not necessarily. Early support helps resolve issues before they escalate. The aim is always to keep you flying, or support your safe return, not to ground you unnecessarily.
11. What role does the Mental Health Professional (MHP) play?
The MHP mentors the Peers, supports clinical decisions, and ensures that each case receives appropriate care when needed. They may also be involved if advanced intervention is required.
12. What is “Just Culture” and how does it apply here?
“Just Culture” ensures that individuals are treated fairly, focusing on learning and improvement rather than blame. It underpins all PPSS operations, reinforcing trust and openness.
13. How do I contact a Peer?
You can reach out your Peer via PPSS by logging into your account and opening a Request. Mention the preferred mode of contact, and one of the assigned Peers, will either contact you within PPSS, or any other way, as soon as possible.
